Sometimes the most transformative opportunities begin with a simple question. During a routine site visit to Armstrong World Industries (AWI), Architectural Technology Associate Professor Tedd Williams asked if his program could benefit from materials scheduled for removal during the company’s renovation. That single inquiry sparked a collaboration that exemplifies how industry partnerships remain essential to the mission of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology as the architect of opportunity.
Alumni Connections Creating Impact
Tedd, a 2000 graduate of the program he now teaches, understands the importance of maintaining strong relationships with industry partners. Jim Kelley, a 1994 graduate and current Director of Project Execution at AWI, serves on the Architectural Technology program’s Occupational Advisory Committee. When Tedd made his initial inquiry, Jim responded by asking what the program truly needed, setting the stage for a comprehensive renovation project.
From Sterile to Stunning
The existing Architectural Technology classroom spaces in the Griscom Education Center lacked the aesthetic appeal that would inspire students entering the design field. Armstrong donated a complete suite of sustainable, high-quality materials, including air-cleaning systems, ceiling panels, and sophisticated wall solutions. Local construction companies contributed time and labor for installation, and additional companies donated further materials a well, creating a true community effort that demonstrated the collaborative spirit essential to our students’ success.
Real-World Learning in Action
The transformation provided students with invaluable hands-on learning experiences. They witnessed professionals designing around constraints like low ceilings and observed how aesthetic considerations impact functional spaces. The once-sterile critique room now features bright yellow walls adorned with multi-colored hexagons that improve both visual appeal and acoustics.
This real-world observation exemplifies our commitment to providing 22+ hours per week of practical learning in our technical programs. Students gained insights into the design process that no textbook could provide, experiencing firsthand how industry professionals approach complex challenges.
Partners Making the Difference
This transformation exemplifies how Thaddeus Stevens College supports our students with partners who make a tangible difference to the College and to student success. Armstrong’s comprehensive donation and ongoing involvement demonstrate the kind of industry engagement that elevates educational outcomes beyond what any institution could achieve alone.
The partnership creates a full-circle impact. Armstrong benefits from the caliber of graduates the College produces, while students benefit from industry-current facilities and direct connections to employers seeking skilled professionals. This collaboration embodies our core mission of creating access to opportunity, ensuring students receive education that leads to family-thriving wages and positions them to be in high demand in their chosen fields.
The Armstrong-Stevens partnership serves as a powerful reminder that our greatest achievements occur when industry leaders invest in student success, transforming not just physical spaces but the entire educational experience.
