Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology is proud to celebrate Dr. Vincent E. Miles, Professor of Social Sciences, who has received the Dr. Rita Smith-Wade-El Higher Education Award from the NAACP Lancaster Branch. The award was presented at the organization’s Annual Gala, recognizing Dr. Miles for more than 25 years of dedicated service, leadership, and advocacy within higher education and the Lancaster community.
Dr. Miles has been a cornerstone of the College’s Social Sciences program for more than two decades. His impact extends far beyond the classroom. Known for his unwavering commitment to students from every walk of life, he has guided, supported, and inspired thousands of graduates. Many credit their personal and professional success to the encouragement and clarity they found while learning under his care.
His path in education began at Thaddeus Stevens College, where he studied before continuing his academic journey at Mansfield University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He went on to teach at Cheyney University prior to returning to Thaddeus Stevens College, bringing a deep understanding of both the student experience and the transformative potential of accessible education.
Throughout his career, Dr. Miles has broken barriers and built lasting change. He was the first person of color inducted into a national academic honor society. He was the first faculty member of color at the College. He founded the Dream BIG Mentoring Academy, supporting local youth through personal growth and academic achievement. At the College, he established the Tech Phi Tech Fraternity, which will mark its 40th anniversary at the end of this academic year. His legacy is also reflected in the Thaddeus Stevens College library, which houses the “Dr. Vincent E. Miles African American Collection” on a dedicated floor named in his honor.
Dr. Miles’ influence is felt most profoundly in the relationships he has built. Former students remain connected to him decades after graduation, often citing his support as life changing. His work embodies the mission of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology: to create pathways that allow students to change the trajectory of their lives.
The NAACP’s recognition highlights the significant and meaningful impact of his service: strengthening families, uplifting communities, and expanding access to opportunity throughout Lancaster and beyond.
