Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology has been named an Aspen Prize Top 200 U.S. Community College by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, making the College eligible to compete for the $1 million 2027 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The Aspen Prize represents the nation’s premier recognition of high achievement and performance among two-year colleges.
Standing Out Among Peers
The 200 colleges were selected based on strong and improving student outcomes data, including retention, completion, and transfer rates. Representing about 20 percent of community colleges nationwide, these institutions demonstrate excellence across diverse settings and serve student populations ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands.
The selection reflects Thaddeus Stevens College’s consistent delivery of transformative educational experiences that lead to meaningful careers and family-thriving wages. With 97 percent of graduates employed or continuing their education and a median first-year salary of $52,500, the College demonstrates what happens when accessible, high-quality technical education meets unwavering commitment to student success.
The Road Ahead
Over the next 20 months, colleges that apply for the Aspen Prize will undergo rigorous assessment based on student outcomes data and scaled practices that led to high and improving student success. The evaluation will examine teaching and learning quality, certificate and degree completion rates, transfer and bachelor’s attainment, employment and wages after graduation, and levels of college access.
This recognition arrives as Thaddeus Stevens College continues strengthening its role as Pennsylvania’s architect of opportunity. The College serves nearly 1,500 students across 24 high-skill technical and trade degree programs, maintaining its mission-driven focus on breaking down barriers that perpetuate educational inequities while creating pathways to careers that strengthen families and communities.
A Testament to Mission
The Aspen Prize Top 200 designation validates what the College has stood for since its founding: that education should be accessible to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity, and that technical training combined with comprehensive student support creates lasting transformation. It recognizes institutions that don’t just talk about outcomes – they deliver them consistently and equitably.
For students walking campus each day, this national recognition reinforces a powerful message: the education they’re receiving, the hands-on learning they’re experiencing with industry-experienced faculty, and the support services surrounding them represent excellence recognized across the entire country. Their decision to pursue education at Thaddeus Stevens College positions them within an institution acknowledged for doing what community colleges do best: transforming futures through accessible, high-quality education.
