On October 20, 2025, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology celebrated its largest gift ever with the formal naming of the Mervine Library. Alumnus Thomas P. Mervine, a 1960 graduate of the College’s Graphic Design and Printing Technology program, designated a gift of more than $5 million from his estate to strengthen this vital institution for student learning and success.
The Circle Comes Full Circle
Mervine’s connection to the College runs deep. During his enrollment, he lived in Cottage B, the very site where the library now stands. His journey from student to accomplished professional to visionary donor embodies what the College has always stood for: an architect of opportunity.
Having benefited from access to education that launched him into career achievement and family thriving wages, Mervine made an intentional choice to return and create that same opportunity for others. This is how institutional legacy truly lives – when a graduate recognizes the transformative power of education and deliberately acts to ensure future students experience it too.
Strengthening the Mission
The Mervine Library stands as both a physical space and a symbol. For students who walk through those doors, the library’s name carries a powerful message: Education changes lives. It opens doors. It creates pathways to meaningful careers.
With more than 1,400 students currently enrolled across 24 technical and trade programs, the College maintains a 97% placement rate (those who have a job or are continuing their education after graduation) and a median starting salary of $52,500. Mervine’s gift will help ensure this commitment to excellence and accessibility continues to thrive for generations to come.
