Jesse Forrest, a Computer and Network Systems Administration major, is gaining valuable industry experience as an IT Intern at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. Through this opportunity, Jesse is applying skills he’s developed in the classroom while gaining firsthand insight into the role of an IT professional.
We asked Jesse to share about his experience and how he’s preparing for his future.
How did you find out about your work experience?
I found out about my work experience through my instructor, Ms. Schultz, and the online job posting.
What does your day-to-day look like at work?
My day at work begins at 8 a.m. I always start my day by checking our ticketing system and reviewing any tickets that have been assigned to me. In IT, you never know exactly what you will be doing any given day; however, there are multiple summer projects that we are working on, such as updating and reimaging laptops and ensuring functionality in all computer labs across our multiple locations. If there are tickets I need to complete, I prioritize those and return to the projects when they are all resolved. My day ends at 4 p.m., and before I leave, I like to write myself a note outlining what needs to be done the following day.
What is something you were surprised to learn in your time working?
Something that surprised me during my time working is how multiple resolutions can solve the same problem. Before working in my field, I didn’t understand that one problem could have multiple solutions, and that sometimes you need to find a new approach to resolve an issue.
What’s been something challenging about your in-field work experience?
A challenging yet rewarding aspect of my in-field work experience is having to learn something new almost every day. In IT, you never know everything, and I’ve learned the ability to quickly learn new things and apply them to real-world problems is crucial in this field.
What has been the best thing about your in-field work experience?
The best thing about my in-field work experience has been my co-workers and the overall environment. Everyone I work with is very supportive and knowledgeable, which leads to a very productive and enjoyable environment to work in.
Tell me a story about something that happened one day as part of your time working in the field?
I have enjoyed traveling to branch locations, like the Transportation Center, to troubleshoot issues and check their computer labs. Resolving problems before students or staff have to deal with them is a rewarding feeling. I also enjoy seeing the different programs and the great resources available at Thaddeus Stevens College.
Would you recommend seeking out an in-field work experience to other students at TSCT?
I would definitely recommend seeking out in-field work experience to other students at the College. The ability to gain real-world experience in your field before you graduate is extremely valuable and will help you prepare for your future career.
How do you think this experience will help you in your future?
This experience will help me in the future as I will already be familiar with the IT field and some of the typical tasks I may encounter. I can apply the skills I have developed and continue to learn throughout my internship to future jobs.
